"Mummy, I'm having a Thomas birthday cake, aren't I?" said my 2 year old son.
"Yes, of course you are" I said.
The pressure and the panic was on.
Birthday cakes were always Mum's domain. I last baked chocolate cup cakes 3 years ago, how was a novice to attempt this huge task?
My initial idea was to do a round cake and then draw a track on the top and get a model Thomas to sit on the track. I went to my local specialist cake decorating shop to see if she had a model Thomas - nothing like that. She did, however, offer me a Thomas shaped cake tin. She explained how I could then cover the cake in fondant and make the Thomas out of fondant and black painting. She was making it sound easy, could I, the novice manage this?
I decided to go for it. Did I succeed? Look at the picture and make your own judgement. Personally I'm proud of my first attempt at a birthday cake. The most nail-biting moment was the unveiling of the cake to my son.
"Wow" he smiled, "I've got a Thomas cake for my birthday."
I did it.

Well done, my son is all grown up now, and when I asked him, what was his favourite Birthday cake, it was one I made not one of the shop bought ones, so it is worth it, they do remember.
Nice job! My nephew would absolutely love you, he adores Thomas.
Great cake and Happy Birthday to the Birthday boy.
Beatiful Cake!!!! happy birthday!!Gloria
Excellent job!!! When my daughter was young the first cake I made was teddy bear for s Teddy Bear Picnic.

That is so sweet. I love it.
That is fantastic. I wish I'd been able to get one when my boy was 2. Mind you, at 10 he's still a fan (just don't tell anyone!!!!).
Happy Birthday to little one =) You did a great job on his cake, well done!
Thank you for all of your comments on my Guest Posting.
My daughter is on maternity leave at the moment (she has a 6 month old baby boy) and so she has had more time to make her son a birthday cake.
I have always made novelty birthday cakes for my children and for the last three years have made my grandson a cake (this year he had two birthday cakes, Thomas to take into Nursery, and I made him a train cake too).
Mum making the cake means a lot more, and throughout life they never forget those cakes.
I'm sure you will agree she did a great job.
This cake looks great - and to think that it was a first attempt! Lucky boy to get two cakes. :-)
Wow what a great thomas cake I bet your son had a great time eating it. Lovely!
you know, I tried to make one of these one time... but it didn't look nearly this good! I'm jealous!! What a great looking cake! Your son will never forget that!!
She did do a great job but don't underestimate your cake making. I have wonderful memories of cakes my grandmother used to make for my birthdays.
